Summer Learning At Home Week 3

July 23, 2021 By Emily No Comments

Fitz and I are having so much fun with summer learning at home activities! Be sure to check out Week 1 and Week 2 for simple, daily learning ideas for your little kids. For week 3, the theme is fairy tales!

Learning At Home Week 3

Monday: Library Day and Family Reading Night

This week, we’re getting books all about fairy tales! I wanted to read some classic stories, as well as modern versions because that always allows for great compare and contrast conversations.

We also like to have a weekly family reading night, where we set aside time to sit down together on the couch and READ together. Fitz is usually really excited to do this on library day because he’s got fresh, new books!

Tuesday: Magic Bean Count

After reading Jack and the Beanstalk, get out two bowls and ten “magic beans” (I would just use 5 for toddlers!). We just used some dry beans we had on hand. Ask your child: How many different combinations of ten can you make? For example, if 2 beans are in one bowl, there would be 8 in the other bowl. Have your child record the numbers that make ten while you work!

Use playing cards to make the activity more fun! See the full activity description HERE.

Wednesday: Flashlight Word Search

Make a list of words you want your child to find. I selected some basic sight words, as well as words specific to our fairy tale books. I wrote them real big on our chalkboard. Turn off the lights and use a flashlight to browse your fairy tale books to find the words. As you find each word, cross it off of the list.

Fitz loves any reason to use a flashlight and he also loves checking things off a list! See the full description of the activity HERE.

Thursday: Jack’s Beanstalk

Another activity with Jack and the Beanstalk – have a fun STEM challenge! Can you build a tall beanstalk out of pipe cleaners? Get out a tape measure to practice measuring how tall the “beanstalk” is. Talk about different ways to built it, techniques for making it taller, and making a strong foundation.

Challenge: Can your beanstalk hold a golden egg? We also had chocolate coins and tried to attach those to the top of the beanstalk too!

Friday: Act it Out

Charades is one of my family’s favorite party games and we’ve already been teaching Fitz how to play. We took turns acting out a fairy tale book and seeing if we could guess each other’s book! This is a fun game to play that is another version of retelling after reading.

I hope you can find an idea here for your kids to stay busy, happy, and learning this summer. Let me know which one is your favorite in the comments below!
