Scavenger Hunt Tips
I have a few tips for making the most of an outdoor scavenger hunt with kids. Just some simple materials can make it so much more interesting. There are also a variety of ways you can structure the scavenger hunt.
Be Prepared
I like to take out some simple items to help make the most of our scavenger hunt. I’ve noticed when I give Fitz these tools, he tends to spend more time observing and interested in the activity. When you give kids scientific tools, they will feel like a little scientist and take it so seriously!
- Clipboard: A sturdy clipboard will make checking items off your list so much easier
- A small shovel and/or plastic tweezers. My son uses these to dig and look for worms, ants, etc. He likes to use to tweezers to grab onto small items, like leafs and wood chips.
- A magnifying glass or hand lens: Fitz loves placing small items in a little petri dish ( I just use a lid or small dish) and observing details.
- Ziplock baggie: I simply place all of our materials in the baggie and clip to the clipboard! It’s so easy and everything is contained.
Ways to Play
There are many different ways to play this scavenger hunt!
- You can guide and explore with your kids as young as toddlers, or you can send your older kids outside for an independent activity.
- You can make it a game to see who can find each item first, or who can check off the whole page first.
- The first scavenger hunt version includes items to find or collect. The second page is a scavenger hunt with simple outdoor tasks to complete. You can do either or both!
- You can add a digital element and take a picture of the items you find to keep track of what you find.
I hope you and your kids enjoy this spring scavenger hunt! You can also find me over on Instagram and Pinterest for more easy and fun kid activities. Happy Spring!
