I set up this simple sensory activity for babies after Cosette got into my gift wrapping tub! Some of the best activities for babies are the ones that they create on their own, am I right?
Simple Sensory Activity for Babies
Yes, this girl will get into anything that she’s not supposed to. Somehow, she saw the edge of the tub under my bed and found I had left the lid unsnapped. Before I knew it, she had gotten into all the tissue paper, bows, and ribbon!
Of course, I hollered at her and immediately put it away…then I thought: Why not let her play with the ribbon, but in a safer way?
Setting up the Activity
I simply taped (be sure your tape is secure!) long strips of ribbon so they hung down from the edge of our kitchen table. I was careful to select ribbons of different colors and textures for her exploration.
She had so much fun pulling, touching, and crawling around the ribbon!
You guys. She LOVED this. She felt like she was getting away with something, because it’s like she knew she was playing with something I usually take away from her. 🙂
It lasted a good 20 minutes of independent play. Which is a long time for an 11 month old!
Adapting This Baby Activity
This activity would be a great way for a younger baby during tummy time too. Push a laundry basket on its side and tape the ribbon so it hangs down in the open area. Your young baby can lay on their tummy and be encouraged to reach their hands up and touch the ribbon!
Why Do This Activity?
There are many reasons to love this simple sensory activity! Besides that it’s just so easy and fun, here are some skills baby can develop:
- Independent play
- Feeling different textures
- Cause and effect as baby pulls and swings the ribbon
What do you think – would you try this simple sensory activity with your little one?
