Interactive math activities are my favorite way to practice math skills! Your kids will be engaged with this interactive math activity that is so EASY to set up and so ENGAGING for your little ones!
Number Line Search: Interactive Math Activity
Materials:
You can do this activity with things you probably already have at home:
- paper
- sticky notes
- markers
That’s it!
How To Set Up:
This is SO EASY to set up! It takes 5 minutes. I promise. And after you explain to your kiddo, they can do the activity independently.
- Make a blank number line. I used numbers 0-10 for Fitz, but you can use 0-5 for younger kids, or go higher for older kids. We taped ours to the wall at kid level.
- Write the numbers you’re using on sticky notes.
- Stick the numbered notes all around your living area. You can stick them in plain sight or hide them!
- Your child will search for the notes, then place each number on the appropriate spot on the number line.
Once complete, you can hide the sticky notes again and repeat the activity! Fitz asked us to keep hiding the numbers multiple times for days…so he did it over and over!
With the repeated practice, he started getting better and quicker at knowing where the numbers went on the number line.
Why this activity is so good
It’s so simple, but has so many benefits:
- Kids are engaged, it gets them up and moving
- Number recognition
- Spatial skills
- Number ordering
- Number sense
Since they will find the numbers out of order, they’ve really got to problem solve and figure out where each number goes.
You can see Fitz problem solving above to figure out where his number goes on the number line. And when he placed a number in the wrong spot, he later self corrected his mistake. Learning is happening!
And, once you set it up, it’s independent work! Yep, you can tape the number line to the wall, hide the stickies, and do the dishes while your little one searches for numbers and places them on the number line.
Let me know if you would try this with your kiddos!
