Easy Halloween STEM Activities
1. Bone Bridges
Set up for this takes a few minutes and you probably have these materials at home!
Fitz loved testing the strength of his “Bone Bridge” by seeing how many of his plastic spiders it would hold. He got to 6 before it fell down!
If you don’t have plastic spiders laying around any other small toys will work.
Materials:
- Qtips
- Building Blocks
- Tape (double sides Scotch tape works well)
- Plastic spiders
Procedure:
- Have your child help you set up the activity by stretching two strips of tape between two tall blocks. See the image above.
- Stick Q tips to the tape to make the Bone Bridge as strong as possible. Fine motor skills are at work here!
- Add plastic spiders one at at time and see how many your Bone Bridge can hold before collapsing!
- Try to build a stronger Bone Bridge.
2. Spider Web Models
How can you use plastic cups and popsicle sticks to model a spider web? I showed Fitz some images of spider webs to inspire his design.
After that, he was set for some independent building. No set-up for this STEM activity!
He was so focused and determined as he carefully laid out the sticks across the cups. He had to do some problem solving when he noticed some cups were too far apart. This caused him to adjust his design…all important STEM skills!
Of course, his plastic spiders came in handy here too, and were his finishing touch. 🙂
3. Candy Corn Maze
Fitz has used square tiles before to build a racetrack for his toy cars, and this activity adds a seasonal twist!
If your kids loooove the corn maze at the pumpkin patch like we do, they will think it’s so fun building their own mini corn mazy out of candy corn. We used the candy pumpkins to mark the entrance and exit of the maze.
This is another easy Halloween STEM activity that doesn’t require any set-up! You may model how to lay out the candies to get your kid started on designing their maze. Also, talk about how to make “dead-ends” to make the maze tricky.
Make it extra fun by role playing and have a Lego man walk through your candy corn maze!
