Flashlight Word Search: A Sight Word Activity

July 15, 2021 By Emily 1 Comment

Is your kid as obsessed with flashlights as mine is? Fitz loves to turn off the lights and wander around the house using his flashlight to see and find things. So this flashlight sight word activity is one of his favorites!

And I love it too, because he is spending time digging around in books and looking for certain letters and words. He is finding sight words being used in context and familiarizing himself with common words in an engaging way.

Another bonus is that this activity keeps your young one occupied independently for awhile. About five minutes of set up and and once you get them busy hunting for words, you’ve got time to knock out those dishes in the sink. Can’t beat that, mama!

Just be sure to check back and celebrate all the words they find. 🙂

How to do a flashlight sight word activity

I use our whiteboard easel to write the list of words that I want him to find. I select words that I know he can find in a certain book(s). We spend a bit of time reading the words together and talking about the letters in them and what they look like.

The best part is this: Turn the lights off and hand your kid the book and a flashlight. Let him look through the book and hunt for the words on the list!

We got extra cozy in our reading nook with pillows and a stuffed animal friend too. Fitz loves a good checklist, so checking off the words as he finds them is super fun to him also!

Why this activity is so good

sight word activity

There are so many reasons why we love this activity!

  • You probably already have the materials: Just a book your kid enjoys and a flashlight!
  • It is a simple and fast set up.
  • Your child can work on this independently with ease.
  • An engaging way to practice sight words- way more fun and meaningful than flashcards.
  • You can easily adapt for different books, words, or you can even just have a younger child search for certain letters!

I’d love to know what you think of this easy and fun flashlight activity! Would you try this with your kiddos?
