Bathing a Baby with Sensitive Skin
Do you have a baby with sensitive skin? Today I’m sharing 3 tips for bathing a baby with sensitive skin or eczema.
I recently brought Cosette to her pediatrician asking about some rough spots that were popping up on here skin. I noticed a rough patch a few weeks ago, but it went away pretty quickly. Shortly after that, a few more rough patches developed on her arms and legs that I could just not get to go away!
I’m sure you’re not surprised the doctor told me that she has baby eczema. Most of the remedies related to how we were bathing her, and making these 3 simple changes have completely cleared up all of her dry spots!
These are the things we did to help ease her skin irritation and get those dry spots smooth again:
1. Don’t bathe your baby too often
Our pediatrician actually encouraged me to be careful not to bathe Coco too often! I share more about our bedtime routine here, but I don’t prefer to make baths part of our nightly routine. I like to keep our bedtime routing as short and sweet as possible!
We do bathe at night often, but it’s not necessarily part of the nightly routine. Also, bathing too often just dries out their skin. Babies, especially those that aren’t even crawling yet, don’t need a nightly bath to keep clean.
2. Only use soap in “dirty” spots
This tip was new to me! I usually like to scrub with soap all over, but I find this to really irritate and dry out Coco’s sensitive skin. All of Coco’s dry patches are on her legs and arms. So in her bath time, I now use soap only on the parts that get the dirtiest- creased areas like her neck, elbows, etc. I have been avoiding scrubbing her arms and legs and just focus on the other areas! This has been helpful in lessening the irritation on her dry spots.
3. Use natural products
This was hard for me, because I was gifted so much generic baby products and they are just so affordable and easy to keep purchasing. But I’ve been sure to use other more natural products instead which can go a long way in helping babies with sensitive skin.
The products I like best are Dove soap (the doctor recommended this Dove bar soap for sensitive skin), Lemyka products, and Aquaphor. Try to refrain from using fancy baby bath products and stick with something that’s more natural.
After doing these things for about a week, Coco’s dry spots literally disappeared. Babies with more severe eczema may need more intervention, but if you are bathing a baby with sensitive skin, dry spots, or some eczema, these three tips on how to bathe a baby can really make a difference.
